A Children’s Classic Comes to Life at White Rock Elementary
“The Jungle Book” came to life at White Rock Elementary School last week. Students, teachers and parents alike worked hard to bring one of the classics to the Rancho Cordova community on January 30 and 31.
Through a Community Enhancement Fund grant, the Sacramento Theatre Company provided theatre classes for all 476 students at White Rock Elementary. This created an opportunity not only for the students to participate and cultivate their skills and interest in theatre, but it also provided a unique experience for the teachers and the community.
“Being a part of Jungle Book Kids, I have learned how to get along with others and you can also learn how to work with what you have,” said Ryan-Rae, a fifth-grader who played the part of Zizzy Vulture and a Wolf.
In fact, the theatre classes shed light on different ways the teachers could integrate theatre arts exercises and activities into their core curriculum classes, such as science, English and social studies. Parents and other community members also participated by building sets for “The Jungle Book,” and created props and costumes.
“White Rock is excited to partner with Sacramento Theatre Company to bring Jungle Book Kids to our school. Not only does it bring joy to the students and families, but it helps White Rock as an active member of the community,” said Canen Peterson, Principal of White Rock Elementary School.
